Day 1

Morning

Begin your day in Altstadt (Old Town), where winding cobbled lanes, colourful guild houses, and hidden courtyards reveal the city's medieval past. As you wander through its narrow streets, you'll discover charming cafés, artisan shops, and historic squares that have changed little over the centuries.

Visit Grossmünster, Zürich's iconic twin-towered church, and climb the tower for sweeping views across the Old Town, the Limmat River, and Lake Zürich beyond.

From there, cross the river to Fraumünster, renowned for its stunning Marc Chagall stained-glass windows, before pausing in Münsterhof Square, one of the city's most elegant public spaces.

Continue uphill to Lindenhof, a peaceful terrace overlooking the rooftops of Zürich, where Roman ruins once stood and today locals gather beneath chestnut trees to enjoy one of the city's finest viewpoints.

Afternoon

Walk down toward the Limmat River and follow the waterfront to Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world's most prestigious shopping streets. Even if luxury boutiques aren't on your itinerary, the wide tree-lined boulevard offers an excellent introduction to Zürich's refined atmosphere.

Stop for lunch at a traditional Swiss restaurant or neighbourhood café.

Lunch ideas:

  • Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (veal in creamy mushroom sauce)
  • Crispy rösti topped with alpine cheese or smoked salmon
  • Swiss sausages with potato salad
  • Fresh pastries from a local bakery
  • Swiss hot chocolate or locally roasted coffee

After lunch, continue to Lake Zürich, where the city's pace noticeably slows. Walk along the lakeside promenade, watching sailboats glide across the water while the Alps frame the horizon on clear days. If time permits, take a short lake cruise, offering beautiful views back toward the city skyline and surrounding hillsides.

Evening

As evening approaches, return through Limmatquai, where the illuminated churches, riverside cafés, and historic buildings create one of Zürich's most atmospheric walks.

Finish your visit with dinner in either the Old Town or along the waterfront.

Dinner ideas:

  • Traditional Swiss fondue
  • Raclette with potatoes and pickles
  • Fresh lake perch or trout
  • Seasonal Swiss wines or local craft beer
  • Luxemburgerli macarons or artisan Swiss chocolate for dessert

End the evening with one final walk along the river or Lake Zürich waterfront, where Zürich's combination of medieval architecture, elegant city life, and natural scenery leaves a lasting impression.

In case of bad weather

If the weather is poor, replace the lakeside walk or cruise with one or more of Zürich's excellent indoor attractions:

  • Kunsthaus Zürich for one of Switzerland's finest art collections.
  • Swiss National Museum to explore the country's history and culture.
  • Lindt Home of Chocolate for an interactive look at Swiss chocolate-making, complete with tastings.
  • WOW Museum for immersive optical illusion exhibits.
  • Browse the covered arcades, cafés, and boutiques along Bahnhofstrasse.

These alternatives preserve the relaxed pace of the itinerary while offering an engaging introduction to Zürich's culture, history, and design.
