2 Days in Prague: Literature and Legends

Day 1: Kafka’s Legacy and Literary Culture
This day explores Prague through its literary heritage, from magnificent historic libraries to the life and legacy of Franz Kafka.
Morning
Begin at the Strahov Monastery Library, one of the most beautiful historic libraries in Europe. Its richly decorated Baroque halls reflect centuries of scholarship and book collecting, offering an ideal introduction to Prague’s literary traditions.
Continue to Golden Lane, a row of colorful houses tucked within the Prague Castle complex. The lane is associated with craftsmen, legends, and writers, including Franz Kafka, who worked in one of the small houses here.
Optional add-on: Head to Žižkov to visit the New Jewish Cemetery, where Franz Kafka is buried. His grave has become an important pilgrimage site for readers from around the world.
Afternoon
Explore the Franz Kafka Museum, whose exhibits examine both the writer’s biography and the city that shaped his work. The museum offers insight into Kafka’s complex relationship with Prague and the atmosphere that permeates his novels and stories.
Optional add-on: Browse the shelves at Shakespeare a Synové s.r.o. or Shakespeare and Sons, an English-language bookstore that has become a gathering place for Prague’s international literary community.
Optional add-on: View the Franz Kafka Statue, a kinetic sculpture depicting the writer through rotating mirrored layers.
Continue into the Old Town and pass by The House at the Minute, where Kafka spent part of his childhood.
Then, join a guided tour of the Klementinum, a former Jesuit college and one of the great centers of learning in Central Europe. Highlights include the magnificent Baroque Library Hall, the Astronomical Tower, and historic scientific spaces that illustrate Prague’s long intellectual tradition.
Evening
If scheduling permits, remain at the Klementinum for an evening classical concert. Listening to music within the historic complex offers a memorable way to experience one of Prague’s great cultural landmarks.
End the day at Café Louvre, a historic café associated with writers, artists, and intellectuals. The elegant interior and long cultural history make it a fitting place to reflect on the literary world explored throughout the day.
Day 2: Golems and Ghost Stories
Explore the legends, mysteries, and folklore that have shaped Prague’s reputation as one of Europe’s most atmospheric cities.
Morning
Optional add-on: Begin at Vyšehrad, the historic hilltop fortress associated with some of the oldest legends of Prague’s founding. The grounds also contain the resting places of many notable Czech writers, artists, and cultural figures.
Visit the Charles Bridge, one of Prague’s most iconic landmarks. Beyond its architectural beauty, the bridge is associated with numerous legends involving saints, miracles, and mysterious events that have accumulated over centuries.
Next, visit Speculum Alchemiae, an unusual museum devoted to Prague’s alchemical traditions. Exhibits explore the experiments, secret laboratories, and occult interests that flourished in Prague.
Afternoon
Spend the afternoon in Josefov, Prague's historic Jewish Quarter, where history and legend are deeply intertwined. Begin at the Old-New Synagogue, one of the oldest active synagogues in Europe. According to local tradition, its attic is where the remains of the legendary Golem were hidden after the creature was deactivated by Rabbi Judah Loew.
Requirements for respectful/modest attire apply at synagogues and other religious sites. Visitors should avoid disrupting religious observances and remain mindful of posted customs.
Continue to the Old Jewish Cemetery, the burial spot of Rabbi Judah Lowe, the scholar and rabbi most closely associated with the Golem legend.
Explore the exhibits of the Jewish Museum in Prague, which preserve and interpret centuries of Jewish life in Bohemia and Moravia.
Evening
End the journey with a ghost tour through the winding streets of the Old Town and Josefov. These tours often weave together stories of haunted houses, restless spirits, medieval crimes, alchemists, and the Golem itself, bringing together many of the legends and mysteries encountered throughout the day.
