Day 1: Porto’s Historic Heart and Port Wine Traditions
Discover Porto’s most iconic historic landmarks, medieval streets, riverside scenery, and the city’s world-famous port wine culture.
Morning
Begin the day with a pastel de nata (egg custard tart) and then head to São Bento Station, renowned for its azulejo tile panels depicting scenes from Portuguese history and daily life. The station is often considered one of the most beautiful railway stations in Europe.
Continue along Rua das Flores, a lively pedestrian street lined with historic buildings, cafés, artisan shops, and balconies draped with flowers.
Optional add-on: Stop nearby at the Igreja do Carmo, known for its striking azulejo-covered side façade.
Take a guided tour of the Palácio da Bolsa, the nineteenth-century stock exchange palace. Highlights include the lavish Arab Room, inspired by the Alhambra in Spain, and elegant ceremonial halls that reflect Porto’s historic commercial wealth.
Next, take a short ride on Porto’s historic tram along the riverside after Palácio da Bolsa, offering a scenic transition toward Ribeira before continuing on.
Afternoon
Visit the Monument Church of St Francis, or Church of São Francisco, known for its richly gilded Baroque interior with intricate woodcarvings and its catacombs.
Requirements for respectful/modest attire apply at churches, synagogues, and other religious sites. Visitors should avoid disrupting religious observances and remain mindful of posted customs.
For lunch, try a francesinha (thick ham, steak, and sausage sandwich with cheese and a tomato-and-beer sauce).
Visit the Porto Cathedral, Sé do Porto, to discover its layered mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture, including its azulejo-lined cloisters. Also make sure to see its famous silver altarpiece and to take in the panoramic views from its tower.
Descend toward Ribeira, Porto’s colorful riverside district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander through narrow medieval streets, admire the traditional buildings overlooking the Douro River, and soak in the lively atmosphere.
Late Afternoon/Evening
Cross the upper level of the Luís I Bridge, which provides spectacular views of the city and river. Continue to Jardim do Morro, one of Porto’s most popular sunset locations. As the sun sets, enjoy panoramic views of Porto’s skyline and the Douro River.
Take the cable car down into Vila Nova de Gaia and visit one of the famous Port Wine Cellars for a tour and tasting. Depending on the season, sunset times, and wine lodge operating hours, it may be preferable to visit the wine lodges before sunset and then return to Jardim do Morro afterward.
Optional add-on: If your schedule permits, attend a performance of fado, a type of traditional Portuguese music. Possible venues include Casa da Mariquinhas, a historic and iconic fado house that offers a traditional dinner-and-show experience, or Ideal Clube de Fado, an intimate venue known for high-quality performances.
