2 Days in Munich
2 Days in Munich

Day 1
Morning
Begin in Marienplatz, where Munich’s historic center immediately sets the tone. The Neues Rathaus dominates the square with its intricate Neo-Gothic façade, while the Glockenspiel draws a shared pause in the city’s daily rhythm. From here, the Old Town unfolds in tight walking distance, with narrow streets, churches, and courtyards revealing layers of medieval and baroque Munich.
Continue to Frauenkirche, whose twin domes act as a visual anchor across the city center. The surrounding streets feel compact and lived-in, where history and everyday life sit side by side rather than separated.
Afternoon
Move into Viktualienmarkt, where the city shifts into food, movement, and local routine. The market is the natural place to slow down and have lunch, with shaded seating and small beer stands under chestnut trees.
Afterwards, continue through St. Peter’s Church and nearby Old Town streets. This part of the city is less about major landmarks and more about short discoveries: bakeries, courtyards, and small squares that appear between buildings.
Evening
As evening settles, experience Munich’s beer hall culture in its most traditional form. Long shared tables, live music, and hearty Bavarian food create a social atmosphere that feels central to the city’s identity rather than staged for visitors.
Day 2
Morning
Start at the Munich Residenz, where Bavaria’s royal past unfolds room by room. The palace shifts between restrained courtyards and highly ornate interiors, revealing how dynastic power shaped the city over centuries.
Exit into Odeonsplatz, where the architectural scale opens dramatically. The transition marks a shift from enclosed royal space to public civic Munich.
Afternoon
Walk into the English Garden, where the city softens into landscape. The change is immediate: structured stone and formality give way to water, grass, and open movement. Paths lead toward the Eisbachwelle/Eisbach wave, where surfers ride a continuous flow of water in the middle of the city, creating one of Munich’s most distinctive contrasts.
Lunch naturally fits into the park experience, in one of the traditional beer gardens where dining is informal and fully integrated into the outdoor setting.
Evening
Spend the evening within or near the English Garden, where the pace slows further. Locals gather casually under trees, and the city feels less like a capital and more like a lived-in landscape. It is a calm way to close the trip, without needing structured sightseeing.
In case of bad weather
When outdoor movement is limited, Munich’s indoor cultural spaces become the core experience:
- Munich Residenz and Treasury
- Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne
- Deutsches Museum
- BMW Welt and BMW Museum
- Frauenkirche interiors
- Viktualienmarkt covered stalls
- Traditional beer halls (Hofbräuhaus, Augustiner)
- Maxvorstadt cafés and galleries
- Bavarian State Opera
