2 Days in Madrid: After Dark

Night 1: Classic Madrid Evenings and Rooftop Views
Experience Madrid’s classic nighttime culture through historic taverns, literary-era streets, tapas bars, lively plazas, and elegant rooftop terraces in the heart of the city.
Evening
Begin in Barrio de las Letras, Madrid’s historic literary quarter associated with Spain’s Golden Age writers. Historic taverns, narrow streets, and atmospheric plazas remain deeply tied to the city’s cultural identity.
Start the evening with vermouth, Rioja wine, or tinto de verano (red wine with fizzy lemon soda) alongside tapas such as croquetas (fried fritters, often filled with ham and a creamy sauce), jamón ibérico (dry-cured Iberian ham), tortilla Española (egg, potato, and onion omelet), and patatas bravas (fried potatoes with spicy sauce) while moving between traditional taverns and wine bars.
Also consider stopping at Cervecería Alemana, a historic beer hall associated with artists, bullfighting culture, and writers, including Ernest Hemingway or at La Venencia, one of Madrid’s best-known historic sherry bars.
Optional add-on: Attend a flamenco performance at one of Madrid’s historic tablaos.
Night
Walk toward Plaza de Santa Ana, one of Madrid’s busiest nighttime gathering places, and spend time in its terraces, cocktail bars, and late-night cafés.
Continue toward Gran Vía, where illuminated architecture, theaters, hotels, and crowds create one of Madrid’s most iconic nighttime streetscapes.
Late Night
Conclude the evening with rooftop drinks overlooking Madrid’s skyline and illuminated boulevards before late-night Churros with Chocolate at San Ginés, one of Madrid’s classic after-hours traditions.
Night 2: Chueca, Malasaña, and Alternative Madrid
Discover Madrid’s contemporary and alternative nightlife through rooftops, live music venues, indie bars, and neighborhoods shaped by the legacy of La Movida Madrileña.
Evening
Begin with sunset at the rooftop terrace of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, known for panoramic views across central Madrid, Gran Vía, and the city’s layered rooftops.
Then continue into Chueca, one of Madrid’s most energetic nightlife districts and a center of LGBTQ+ culture and contemporary urban life. Spend the evening enjoying cocktails, wine bars, terraces, and stylish tapas venues along busy pedestrian streets that remain lively late into the night.
Night
Optional add-on: If there’s a show on, head to Sala El Sol, one of the city’s classic live music venues where many important bands associated with Madrid’s post-dictatorship cultural explosion once performed as Spain emerged from the Franco era.
Continue toward Malasaña, the neighborhood most closely associated with La Movida Madrileña, the post-Franco cultural movement that transformed Madrid’s music, fashion, nightlife, and artistic identity.
Consider stopping at La Vía Láctea, a legendary rock-and-roll dive bar with walls covered in posters and neon whose regulars during the Movida era included Pedro Almodóvar.
Spend the night moving between indie bars, retro taverns, live music venues, vinyl-focused lounges, quirky cocktail bars, and neighborhood plazas filled with late-night crowds.
Late Night
Explore Malasaña’s increasingly energetic late-night atmosphere through indie concerts, cocktail lounges, and alternative dance venues.
