Day 1: Old Hanoi and Cultural Foundations

Step back in time and explore the heart of Hanoi’s history and traditions.

Morning

Begin the day at the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first national university, as an introduction to the city’s scholarly and Confucian roots.

From here, continue to the Old Quarter, exploring its narrow streets both on foot and by cyclo to experience the area’s energy while managing your walking time. Enjoy local favorite dishes of pho, bun cha, or bánh mì before leaving the neighborhood.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake, a central gathering place for locals. Cross the iconic red bridge to visit Ngoc Son Temple, set on a small island in the lake, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and shaded paths surrounding the water.

Evening

In the evening, attend the Thang Long Water Puppet Show, a traditional performance that brings Vietnamese folklore and rural life to life. The show features wooden puppets animated on a water stage, accompanied by live musicians playing traditional instruments and narrating scenes of farming, fishing, village festivals, and legendary tales. Purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended.

Optional add-on: Take an evening stroll through the Old Quarter, where the streets are often illuminated with decorative lanterns, this time to sample some street treats, such as sticky rice ice cream or bánh flan.

Day 2: Vietnamese History and Heritage

Discover Vietnam’s past and present through its legendary leaders and rich culture.

Morning

Optional add-on: Make an early morning visit to Quang Ba Flower Market to experience the energetic atmosphere and vibrant bouqets of flowers.

Begin the day at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, an important national site dedicated to Vietnam’s revolutionary leader. Families with young kids might opt to skip this stop.

After the mausoleum visit, continue through the surrounding grounds to see the Ho Chi Minh Stilt House, followed by the nearby One Pillar Pagoda, a Buddhist structure set above a lotus pond. Together, these sites provide insight into Vietnam’s modern history, political identity, and cultural symbolism.

Afternoon

Visit the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which introduces Vietnam’s many ethnic groups through colorful exhibits, traditional clothing, everyday objects, and interactive displays. Be sure to spend time in the outdoor area, where full-scale traditional houses from different regions of the country bring cultural diversity to life in an accessible, visual way.

Continue on to Dong Xuan Market, Hanoi’s largest covered market. Wander through the stalls selling clothing, household goods, snacks, and local products.

Evening

Make your way to Ta Hien Street, one of the Old Quarter’s most energetic streets, for casual street food sampling. This area offers a variety of easy-to-share dishes and snacks, such as grilled meat skewers and fried spring rolls. Plan to visit earlier in the evening and to leave before 7 pm, when the crowds and noise increase.

Alternate Afternoon Plans for Older Children

Families with older kids might consider visiting Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the “Hanoi Hilton,” which recounts the experiences of Vietnamese revolutionaries and American POWs alike instead of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology.

Alternate Evening Plans for Young Children

Families with young children might consider having West Lake lakeside dinner followed by an evening walk around the lake for a more serene, relaxed alternative to Ta Hien Street.

Day 3: Cultural Immersion and City Life

End your time in Hanoi with a day of cooking, culture, and city views that brings Hanoi to life.

Morning

Spend the morning in a Vietnamese cooking class, beginning with a guided visit to a local market, such as Dong Xuan Market or other smaller wet markets, to learn about key ingredients, herbs, and flavors used in everyday Vietnamese cooking. This hands-on experience offers an interactive way to engage with everyday Vietnamese culture while learning about local flavors and cooking techniques.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, visit the Vietnamese Women’s Museum, which highlights the roles of women in Vietnamese family life, history, and society. Exhibits cover topics such as traditional dress, marriage customs, daily work, and cultural practices across different regions of the country.

Optional add-on: After the Vietnamese Women's Museum, visit Train Street to see a train pass close to cafes and homes in an alley. Be sure to check current restrictions on access to Train Street.

Evening

Before sunset, head to the Lotte Observation Deck for panoramic views over Hanoi. From above, take in the contrast between the city’s historic neighborhoods, lakes, and modern skyline as the light fades and the city begins to glow.

Then head over to the Hoan Kiem Lake area. If it’s the weekend, explore Hoan Kiem Weekend Walking Street and the Hanoi Weekend Night Market, where locals gather to socialize, shop, and enjoy street food. If it’s a weekday, opt for a cyclo ride around Hoan Kiem Lake instead.

Alternate Morning Plans with Young Children

Families with young children might consider visiting Bat Trang Pottery Village to participate in workshops or view demonstrations of artisans at work, stroll through a historic village, shop for unique ceramics, and explore a museum dedicated to the history of traditional ceramics instead of taking a Vietnamese cooking class with market tour and visiting the Vietnamese Women’s Museum.
