Half Day in Central Copehagen

Explore central Copenhagen to deepen your understanding of the city’s historical, geographic, and cultural foundations.

Plan on spending some time in the tower of Christiansborg Palace for panoramic views of the city. All other stops are designed to be experienced from the outside, with only very brief interior visits where appropriate.

Use the associated audioguides as you visit the following locations:

  • Copenhagen City Hall: The headquarters of the city council with historic architecture and a prominent clock tower
  • Tivoli Gardens: Historic amusement park with ornate entrances, classic lights, and atmospheric gardens
  • Christiansborg Palace: Seat of the Danish Parliament and royal reception spaces, featuring grand exterior architecture on the small island of Slotsholmen
  • Thorvaldsens Museum: Neoclassical museum dedicated to sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and notable for its polychrome facade, Egyptian-inspired frieze, and sculptural detailing
  • Gammel Strand: Historic fish market quay along the canal between Slotsholmen and the old city, now also used for contemporary art exhibits
  • Kongens Nytorv: Copenhagen's largest historic square features the equestrian statue of Christian V and the baroque facade of Charlottenborg Palace
  • Kunsthal Charlottenborg: Contemporary art exhibits in a Baroque palace
  • Nyhavn: the iconic canal district lined with brightly painted townhouses, historic wooden ships, outdoor cafés, and lively waterfront activity
  • Amalienborg: The primary residence of the Danish royal family
  • Copenhagen Opera House: The national opera house of Denmark, best seen from the Amalienborg waterfront looking east across the harbour, where the full scale of the cantilevered roof and its relationship to the palace are most apparent
  • Frederiks Church: Also called the Marble Church and known for its massive copper-green dome
  • Gefion Fountain: A large fountain depicting the Norse goddess Gefion
  • The Little Mermaid: Famous bronze sculpture inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale
  • Kastellet: Star-shaped fortress with grassy ramparts, windmill views, and peaceful walking paths

Optional Trip Extension

To extend your time in Copenhagen, consider exploring Rosenborg Castle, a Renaissance castle originally built by King Christian IV and now home to the Danish crown jewels, royal regalia, and historic interiors and then spending the evening at Tivoli Gardens.
