Day 1: Religion and Local Culture

Balance mountain viewpoints with time in the city, moving from local markets and historic temples to a lively evening of street stalls and night-time energy.

Morning

Begin the day at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the iconic mountaintop temple with a golden chedi, intricate carvings, and panoramic views of the city below. Requirements for respectful/modest attire apply at temples, mosques, and other religious sites. Visitors should avoid disrupting religious observances and remain mindful of posted customs.

Afternoon

Return to the city to explore Warorot Market, a lively hub of fresh produce, spices, and local goods.

Then visit Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh, two historic temples in the Old City. Wat Chedi Luang is known for the partially ruined 15th-century chedi at its center, while Wat Phra Singh is known for its classic Lanna architecture and sacred Buddha images.

Optional add-on: Participate in a monk chat at Wat Chedi Luang.

Evening

Conclude the day exploring one of Chiang Mai’s markets, with Sunday's market being the most vibrant and energetic. The Chiang Mai Sunday Walking Street Market is filled with local handicrafts, street food vendors, and live performances.

Alternate Evening Locations

If it's Saturday, visit the Saturday Night Market Walking Street, which is similar to Sunday's market, but smaller and in a different location.

On weekdays, head to the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar for a mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment.
